Bears Got It Right With Orton, Is Tait's Age an Issue?

Now that we have a starter the internet is a safer place to be.  Most journalists and critics agree the Bears made the correct call.

He is the right quarterback for this Bears team because they can't afford a passer who will lose the game. Orton might not win as many games as Grossman could, but he won't lose as many.

Orton has become a much different player than he was in college. Then, he was willing to take more chances. He played with more of a gunslinger mentality. Now it looks as if he has been neutered by his offense and the circumstances surrounding his team. He is doing what he has to do to survive. But as he gains experience and increased confidence, there is no reason he cannot become a bolder passer.

Is part of the Bears offensive line problems the fact that age is catching up with John Tait?

Tait, 33, arrived at training camp as "The Assumption," the player whose consistency was considered a given because of his experience, ability and commitment. That might be why Saturday night's setback at Seattle that Tait acknowledged, a showing punctuated when Darryl Tapp zipped by him to force a Rex Grossman interception, was so startling.

John Tait Staying Put, Brandon McGowan Hurt

When Chris Williams underwent surgery last week most thought it was only a matter of time before John Tait found himself back on duty on the left side, but it seems the Bears are not planning on making that move.

'I just look at how they are playing. I don't look at the number of starts or who played where,'' Hiestand said. ''We are different every year. You are different, I am different. You don't stay the same. What they did in the offseason to prepare to play the positions they are playing right now -- the amount of repetitions that has gone into their work to get to the point they are right now is incredible. Nobody has any idea how many hours they have worked on their craft from that side.''

During practice Monday safety Brandon McGowan went down with an ankle injury.  It is not thought to be anything more than a basic sprain, but when any injury creeps up at the safety spot it becomes a big deal.

"We can't have an injury at any position, particularly on the back end," Bears secondary coach Steven Wilks said. "That's why you have backups, and we feel we have qualified guys in Payne and Steltz."

Bears players are still taking the high road after former Bears receiver Muhsin Muhammad felt the need to trash talk his former team.

"'Bernard Berrian came here and developed and became a rich man,'' receivers coach Darryl Drake said. ''Everybody is entitled to their opinions. I love Moose and hope that he continues to have an illustrious career. We're going to do what we do here. That's our feeling.

''I'll give him a great big hug, right around the neck [when they meet in Week 2] because I love him.''

Newcomer Brandon Lloyd said Muhammad's reaction is natural. Lloyd was critical of the 49ers after they traded him to the Redskins in 2006. ''You say bad things when you're hurt,'' Lloyd said.

Rashied Davis said Muhammad was upset when he was cut, a move that saved the Bears a $500,000 roster bonus.

''I don't think receivers go to die here,'' Davis said. ''I've been making myself here.''

Offensive coordinator Ron Turner also wanted to stay out of the action.

''I could say a lot,'' he said, ''but I won't.''

Bears Hit Bottom, Ask Miller To Come Back

In case the Bears forgot the offensive line last season, well it sucked.  Becuase of that the Bears released tackle Fred Miller.

Faced with a lot of injuries the Bears have reached out to the former Bear to make a return.

Agent Harold Lewis said Miller, 35, is mulling whether to sign with the Bears, Texans or Ravens. The decision could be finalized in the next day.

"His preference would be to return to the Bears," Lewis said Thursday evening.

Miller was released in February for salary cap reasons. He was heading into the final two years of his five-year, $25.5 million contract. He was due a $500,000 bonus on March 1 and scheduled to make $4 million this season.

The article goes on to say that this will allow the Bears to move John Tait back to left tackle.  John St. Clair,  Josh Beekman and Anthony Oakley would all get looks at left guard.

Maybe I should take this opportunity to remind the Bears there is a guy who would be a better pickup still available.  I don't think I really need to mention names...AGAIN.

Roberto Garza Interview

The fine people at Reebok have given me the opportunity to have a few moments of Bears lineman Roberto Garza's time.  He is helping them with the release of their new shoe line, Hex Ride .

The HexRide is a new cushioning technology that Reebok has just launched.  It’s what you see on the bottom of the shoe- a honeycomb pattern of air bubbles.
Each bubble in HexRide is a responsive air spring that is soft when you walk and firmer when you run.  It's lightweight because Reebok replaced foam with weightless bubbles.
All the NFL players will be wearing the shoes during training camp.

On to the interview.  This was by phone, so the I couldn't get the answers word for word, but I will get the point across.

1) Last year the offensive line took a hit and a lot of blame for the problems that plagued the offense fell on them.  Do you feel more confident going into this season that the offensive line can return to form and be the anchor this team needs?

We absolutely can.  The main thing we need to do is refocus and reestablish the run game.  Last year we had some injuries and guys had to step in.  This year we have John Tait moving to right tackle and Chris Williams possibly stepping in.

2) The biggest move the Bears have made this off season is drafting Chris Williams out of Vanderbilt.  What must he do to come in and be ready for opening day?

As with any rookie, he just needs to get in and practice hard.  He is working a lot with our strength coach to get ready for the rigors of a 16 game season.  He needs to put in as much work as he can on this technique and get a good grasp on the offense.  He will get used to the speed of the game as time goes on and he will start watching game film of the defensive ends he is going to see.

3) How much individual time would a vet on the line spend working with a rookie or is that left to the coaching staff?

Well, he will spend a lot of time with the other guys on the line and will learn just being next to them.  He will pick up the tricks of the trade.  He will watch a lot of film and has to really be patient, but it will come.  As far as guys on the line, all he has to do is ask.

4) Assuming that Williams is able start at left tackle and John Tait is moved back to right, what is the hardest part about working in a line where there are new players and you have guys next to you who weren't the year before?

You get used to everybody just by being there.  We have until Sept 7, we will be ready.  Over time you get accustomed to what each guy thinking and you get used to the calls and recognizing defenses.

5) Over the last few years the Bears have started a number of different QBs and RBs,  how does this affect the offensive line and how they prepare?  Are different protections and blocking schemes setup for different players?

Not really.  It still is the same offense.  You do have to get used to different snap counts and having a different voice in the huddle and calling plays.  We have two guys who are very familiar with the offense and they have a tough competition ahead of them.

6) What does it mean to an offensive line to have a guy like Olin Kruetz in the middle?

It is very important to have a guy like him in there.  He is very tough and extremely smart.  As a player you learn a lot just in the way he prepares for a game.  He is one of the hardest workers on and off the field.

7) Who is the toughest guy you have ever had to line up against?

The two that come to mind are in Minnesota.  Both the Williams, Pat and Kevin.  Both of them are tough and really good at stuffing the run.

There it is.  I hope you enjoyed it.  Thanks to Reebok and Roberto Graza for the time.

John Tait Moved To Right?

With the drafting of Chris Williams with the Bears first pick it has been assumed that incumbent left tackle, John Tait,  would move to the right side and let Williams, considered the only true left tackle in the draft, take over that spot, but nothing was official.

While it still isn't at camp John Tait ran reps with the first team at the right side with John St. Clair working on the left side.

Both moves make sense.  Get Tait as many reps at right and St. Clair practices at left in case Williams is a hold out or isn't ready to take over the position.
