Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Panthers made 23 roster moves on Saturday to trim their roster to 53 players, including putting star wide receiver Steve Smith on the reserve/suspended list and cutting cornerback Ricardo Colclough, who reportedly was arrested early Saturday morning for driving while impaired. The Charlotte Observer reported Saturday that Colclough, who the paper said was on track to win a roster spot as a kick returner and backup cornerback, was arrested at 2:35 a.m. in Charlotte. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police would not release arrest details, but the Observer said that Colclough was released from Mecklenburg jail at about 1:30 p.m. on $1,000 bond. The Panthers announced his release along with the rest of their roster moves later Saturday. Drafted in the second round of the 2004 draft by Pittsburgh out of Tusculum, Colclough has one interception in 36 career games. Smith's move was not a surprise, as he has been suspended by the team for the first two regular season games without pay for punching cornerback Ken Lucas, breaking his nose in the process, during a practice at training camp earlier this month. Smith will miss the season opener September 7 at San Diego and the team's home opener September 14, against Chicago. The Utah product led the Panthers last season with 87 receptions for 1,002 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. Also on Saturday the Panthers released guard Milford Brown, guard Toniu Fonoti, safety Terrence Holt, wide receivers Samie Parker and Travis Taylor, and running back LaBrandon Toefield. The Panthers waived quarterback Brett Basanez, running back Decori Birmingham, wide receiver William Buchanan, safety Joe Fields, fullback Troy Fleming, wide receiver Chris Hannon, defensive tackle Nick Hayden, guard Evan Mathis, defensive end Stanley McClover, offensive tackles Rueben Riley and Geoff Schwartz, linebacker Tim Shaw, cornerback Darren Toney, tight end Chad Upshaw, and defensive tackle Stephen Williams.
